When talking about clothes, a lot of people gasp at the mention of prints as if they are scary, intimidating and far too attention-grabbing to even consider wearing. Now although I have generalised this mentality, and there are people who - sometimes to a fault - are not scared at all (perhaps it is this sort of person that makes the others gasp at the thought in the first place), prints are something you should definitely not shy away from this season! Whether you choose tribal, floral or animal (be careful here) there is sure to be a print however subtle or extreme to suit your personal style.

Instead of being boring and by-passing the printed garments on the racks (I am guilty of doing this myself), try them on. Take note of Melbourne based fashion designer, Alexi Freeman, who uses geometric prints in all of his collections, and softens them with gorgeous drapery. My favourite type of print for this season however, and one that is fast becoming a huge trend and infiltrating through collections like Josh Goot and Alexander McQueen is the digital print. Despite being very colourful and possessing almost a water-colour–like quality, this type of print seems to mute the intimidated and overwhelming squeal of those that tend to steer clear of prints in the first place.

When choosing to wear a print, there are some style tips you should remember. Do not mix prints, unless you really know what you’re doing, and leave the remainder of your outfit fairly simple. Do not wear printed shoes whilst wearing printed clothes. And always look at the direction the print is going. Like stripes, if the overall design of the print is vertical it is going to make you look longer!

By remembering these very simple rules, the shy-away attitude some have towards prints might one day be eliminated as they find they are not really that scary at all!
